Some books deal with serious issues ranging from grief to racial oppression to deprivation; others are simply a joy to read. The theme of this story is a poetry book about insects. The year I did this book with my students, they really loved reciting these poems. I would use this book with second graders, to help them get inspired to write in their own poetry. What that means, exactly, depends on the interpretation of the Newbery committee, which changes every year — thus, the widely varied nature of the winners, and the difficulty with predictions.
